The benefits of broccoli sprouts and methods for germinating seeds
Broccoli sprouts are called a medicine product; they are necessary for proper nutrition. Sprouts have healing, antimicrobial and anticancer effects. One sprouted seed contains as much nutrients as a kilogram head of cabbage. We will tell you in detail how to sprout broccoli seeds for food in order to get a source of vitamins, microelements, antioxidants at home and protect yourself from diseases.
Beneficial properties of broccoli sprouts: why grow and eat them
In dry grains, beneficial elements are inactive. During germination, complex substances are broken down into simple ones, which are easier and faster to absorb.
Sprouted grains are used for the prevention and treatment of diseases:
- stomach and duodenal ulcers;
- visual impairment;
- diseases of the nervous system;
- skin lesions;
- atherosclerosis;
- abnormalities in the functioning of the heart and blood vessels;
- musculoskeletal disorder.
Sprouts heal all organs due to the presence of chemical compounds:
- sulforaphane destroys cancer cells, slows their growth, has a bactericidal effect (it is found in large quantities in cabbage seeds and is distributed throughout the vegetable as it grows);
- glucoraphanin lowers blood pressure and normalizes kidney function;
- phenols are effective for the prevention of asthma and diabetes;
- mononucleotides are involved in cellular energy metabolism.
What should broccoli seeds be like to germinate?
For germination, it is important to use high-quality grains intended specifically for for dietary nutrition. They must not be treated with pesticides or other chemicals. These harmful substances destroy sulforaphane and other beneficial elements contained in cabbage grains. Because of this, the therapeutic effect of using sprouts is reduced. The seeds sold in stores are not always worth eating.
Choose seeds that are undamaged, without stains, without fungal diseases, and not overdried.
Important! When purchasing, choose seeds that say “for germination” on the package.
Planting material for producing seedlings should be:
- safe;
- environmentally friendly;
- certified.
Preparing dishes and seeds
First, prepare the seeds and containers for sowing. Plastic transparent containers with a depth of at least 10 cm with lids or glass jars are suitable. If there is no lid, use plastic film.
The dishes and lids are treated:
- Pour boiling water over it or immerse it in a bleach solution (9 parts water to one part household bleach) for 20 minutes.
- Rinse with clean water.
Seed preparation:
- 2-3 tbsp. l. planting material is filled with water at room temperature overnight.
- In the morning, drain the water and transfer the seeds to a treated container for germination.
For 15 cm² of container area, use 1 tbsp. l. planting material.
How to properly sprout broccoli sprouts for food
Grow sprouts in two ways: in the soil and without it.
The sprouts are ready for consumption when microgreens appear - leaves 2-6 cm long. Warmth and high humidity are necessary for a good harvest.
In the ground
Soil suitable for germination for seedlings or indoor plants. Algorithm of actions:
- A thin layer of moist soil is poured into the treated dishes.
- Seeds are distributed on top.
- Sprinkle with a thin layer of damp soil.
- Cover the dish with a lid or stretch plastic wrap.
- Leave the container at room temperature without access to sunlight for 3-5 days until the first sprout appears; if necessary, irrigate with water from a spray bottle.
- After 5 days, move to a place with indirect sunlight to accumulate chlorophyll. The leaves turn green.
- After 1-2 days the harvest is harvested.
The sprouts are cut with scissors or pulled out of the soil into a plate of cold water and washed carefully. The soil is reused. The optimal temperature for growth is +18…+24°C.
Attention! Direct sunlight will harm the sprouts.
Without soil
To obtain microgreens, use paper towels or gauze:
- Place several damp layers of paper towel on the bottom of the treated container.
- Scatter the soaked seeds on a towel and cover loosely with a lid or stretch a film with holes for ventilation.
- After 5 days the harvest is harvested.
Maintain a constant temperature of about +21°C.
Second way:
- After soaking and washing, the seeds are placed in a container and placed in a dark place for 3 days.
- The grains are washed 2-3 times a day, and citric acid is added to the water once to prevent mold.
- On the fourth day, the jar is placed in the light to accumulate chlorophyll.
- The next day the harvest is harvested.
How to eat correctly
Microgreens are consumed in their pure form, in salads, as a sauce, mixed with sour cream and garlic. It is mixed in a blender with vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Microgreens taste like white cabbage.
The sprouts can be stored in a container in the refrigerator for up to five days, loosely covered. They must first be washed and dried for 6-8 hours on a paper towel. After two days for further storage, rinse and dry again.
How many broccoli sprouts should you eat per day?
To healthy food they get used to it gradually. The first time use 1-2 tsp. sprouts in the first half of the day - this is an active food. It is not advisable to take it at night - it may cause insomnia. After 3 months, increase the amount to 70 g - this is the maximum portion.
Important! Sprouts should not be consumed with dairy products - this will cause increased gas formation.
Conclusion
Sprouts broccoli will replenish the lack of vitamins and microelements in the body in spring and winter. They are grown in soil and on paper. A good harvest requires warmth and moisture. Regular consumption of microgreens improves immunity and prevents diseases of internal organs.
