“Vineta” is the most popular and high-yielding potato variety among amateur gardeners

Vineta is a potato variety that has no disadvantages, while the list of its positive characteristics is very extensive. Initially bred for cultivation in harsh climatic conditions, this variety is successfully cultivated in almost all countries and regions: farmers appreciated its yield, unpretentiousness and other positive qualities.

Characteristics of potatoes of the Vineta variety

Vineta is a table potato variety bred by German breeders in 1986. The originator of the variety is EUROPLANT PFLANZENZUCHT GMBH.

The plant is an erect, spreading and tall bush, reaching 50-70 cm in height. The leaves are wide, light green in color, with slightly or moderately pronounced waviness along the edges. During flowering, small or medium-sized corollas appear on the bushes, consisting of 3-7 white flowers with a yellow core.

The peel is thin, smooth, dark brown when grown in loam, and light yellow in sandy soil. In case of drought, a mesh pattern may form on the surface, which does not affect the quality, taste and storage of root vegetables. The eyes are small, almost invisible.

The pulp is medium juicy, light yellow in color, tender and crumbly. Does not change color during heat treatment. Potatoes are suitable for preparing first and second courses, as well as for making chips.

The Vineta variety is characterized by high productivity: depending on the time of harvest, 127-238 centners of potatoes can be harvested from 1 hectare of land.

Region for cultivation and planting dates

Vineta potatoes are recommended for cultivation in the Central, Volga-Vyatka, North Caucasus, Middle Volga, Ural and Central Black Earth regions.

Potatoes are planted in the ground when it warms up to +8...+10°C. When grown in the southern regions, it is possible to obtain 2 harvests. In this case, planting is carried out twice - in the middle or at the end of March and immediately after the first harvest, in June or early July.

Attention! In the northern regions of the Russian Federation, in Siberia and the Far East, planting takes place in mid-May.

The main advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Advantages of the Vineta variety:

  • early maturation;
  • ease of care;
  • high productivity;
  • lack of requirements regarding soil composition;
  • excellent taste;
  • friendly ripening of tubers;
  • long-term storage;
  • resistance to mechanical damage and characteristic diseases;
  • Preservation of shape and color during cooking.

In case of proper care and compliance with planting rules, the variety has no disadvantages.

Some disadvantages are noted when agricultural practices are violated:

  • Potatoes do not germinate well on soil treated with nitrogen fertilizers;
  • excessive moisture and waterlogging of the soil are the causes of the development of late blight;
  • Untreated seed material before planting is often attacked by pests.

Features of planting and growing

Despite the fact that Vineta is an unpretentious variety, it has features that must be taken into account in order to obtain the most abundant harvest.

Preparing for landing

Tubers weighing 35-85 g are germinated before planting, placed for a month in a room with diffused lighting, humidity 90-95% and air temperature +12...+15°C during the day and +6...+8°C at night.

To strengthen the immunity of planting material, it is treated with a solution of boric acid, copper sulfate, wood ash or manganese and placed in a bright, dry place to produce the alkaloid solanine.

To accelerate the growth of potatoes, the day before planting, the tubers are treated with Poteytin, Epin, Planriz, Kornevin or Heteroauxin.

In autumn, the soil is cleared of plant residues, dug deep, plowed to a depth of 22-25 cm, and fertilized with mineral (urea) and organic (manure, ash) fertilizers.

If fertilizers were not applied to the soil in the fall, this is done in the spring, 14-20 days before planting potatoes: 1 liter of dry humus and one handful of wood ash are added to each hole. The soil is also saturated with minerals - “Nitrophoska” and a mixture of “Ammophos” and dolomite flour.

Reference. The variety grows well in sandy, sandy loam, loamy soil and cultivated peat bogs.

Planting scheme and technology

Potatoes are planted in dry and clear weather, adhering to the following algorithm of actions:

  • divide the area into rows, the distance between which is 50-70 cm;
  • in each row, dig holes 10 cm deep at a distance of 25-35 cm from each other;
  • pour wood ash into the bottom of the holes;
  • place 1-2 tubers with sprouts up in each hole, to a depth of 8-10 cm;
  • cover the potatoes with soil without damaging the sprouts;
  • loosen the soil.

If there is a threat of frost returning, the beds are covered with polyethylene or non-woven material.

Features of cultivation

Rules for growing the Vineta variety:

  • for three seasons, do not plant potatoes in an area where nightshade crops previously grew;
  • do not plant the Vineta variety in alumina and in lowlands, as water is retained there;
  • Choose a flat and well-lit place on a hill for planting potatoes.

Nuances of care

After planting the tubers, the field is weeded to get rid of weeds. Hilling is carried out at least three times per season:

  • after the appearance of abundant shoots;
  • during flowering;
  • when the tops spread.

The procedure protects potatoes from frost, makes the soil more moisture- and breathable, and has a beneficial effect on the growth of the root system and the formation of tubers.

Watering mode

The variety tolerates drought well and does not like excessive moisture, so if there is sufficient natural precipitation, additional watering of the bushes is not necessary.

If the summer is dry, water the potatoes only three times:

  • immediately after landing;
  • during budding;
  • after flowering.

In case of heavy rainfall, refuse one of the waterings, and in case of severe drought, water more often. They focus on the condition of the soil - watering is required if it has dried out more than 8 cm deep.

For 1 m² of land, about 50 liters of water is required, which is poured at the root of the bushes, making sure that the drops do not fall on the leaves and cause sunburn.

Top dressing

When applying fertilizers, adhere to the following scheme:

  • during the first spring cultivation of the field, a mixture of humus, superphosphate and potassium fertilizers is added to the soil in a ratio of 1:6:5;
  • the first young shoots are fertilized with ammonium nitrate;
  • Before budding begins, the bushes are fed with superphosphate and potassium fertilizers.

It is forbidden fertilize potatoes during flowering and ripening of tubers - this leads to an excess of nitrates in the pulp.

Disease and pest control

The variety is resistant to such common diseases for this crop as root rot, golden nematode, wrinkled mosaic, potato canker, scab, rust, blackleg, brown spot, Alternaria, fusarium and leaf curl.

The only disease that is dangerous for the Vineta variety is late blight of the tops. To avoid the risk of disease, promptly get rid of weeds, hill up bushes, and do preventive spraying with Acrobat or Ridomil Gold.

Attention! Of the pests, Colorado potato beetles pose a real danger to Vineta. They can be dealt with mechanically by removing them from the bushes, or by spraying with a urea solution - 100 g per 10 liters of water. To prevent the appearance of insects, onion peels are placed in the holes before planting potatoes.

Harvest and storage

Vineta is the most popular and high-yielding potato variety among amateur gardeners

The time of harvest is indicated by yellowing of the leaves of the lower tier. Mass digging of potatoes is carried out when all the tops turn yellow.

How and when to collect

Vineta is an early ripening potato variety.From the moment of planting until the harvest ripens, 70-75 days pass, but the first young potatoes can be dug up after 43-45 days.

Storage features and keeping quality of the variety

When the potatoes are dug up, they are dried for several hours and sorted: all rotten tubers are thrown away, and those that were mechanically damaged during harvest are set aside for early consumption.

The remaining tubers are cleared of soil, placed in bags or nets and stored in a pre-disinfected, dry, dark room with good ventilation, where the air temperature is +4-5°C. Higher temperatures lead to drying, wrinkling and premature germination of tubers. The keeping quality of the variety is 87%.

Important! Tubers that will be used for landings, should be stored separately.

What difficulties may there be when growing

When growing Vineta potatoes, some problems may arise:

  • slow germination of tubers when planted in soil saturated with nitrogen fertilizers;
  • late blight of tops due to waterlogging of the soil;
  • Damage to tubers when using untreated and undisinfected seed.

Whatever the problem, it arises as a result of improper care of the plant, so it is important to follow the rules of agricultural technology.

Advice from experienced gardeners and reviews about the Vineta variety

Farmers highly appreciate the variety, as evidenced by numerous laudatory reviews on specialized forums.

Tamara, Krasnodar: “I’ve been growing this variety for six or seven years now, I’m completely satisfied with it - the harvest is plentiful, the potatoes are tasty, not too much is overcooked. But I want to warn you that the plot must not be small to grow this variety.The fact is that you can dig it up in 1.5 months and change the planting site for 3 years. Therefore, if there is little space, then it is better to choose another variety.”

Pavel, Kaluga: “I tried growing different varieties and they all had the problem of leaf curling. I read the description of the Vineta potato variety, looked at the photo, heard about its resistance to disease and decided to try it. I didn’t regret it - not a single bush got sick, it bloomed well, and the harvest was simply gorgeous.”

Vasily, Novgorod region: “I live in a village and plant potatoes every year. Of all the varieties I tried to grow, I settled on Vineta. So far it seems to me that I have found my ideal. Vineta does not get sick, produces an excellent harvest and does not require any too complicated care.”

    You write that the variety is resistant to scab, but in the photo the potatoes are completely covered in scab.

    The variety is really resistant to scab, but in the photo it is most likely a different variety. There is a ton of bullshit on the Internet; for reliable information you have to read scientific monographs or check it in person.

    • Andrey Palych

      Perhaps they didn’t choose the best photo for illustration... The main thing is that the variety is resistant to scab and this information is reliable).
      If you have your own photos of this variety, please send them.We will be happy to place them in the article so as not to confuse readers.
